If you can absolutely avoid having to open or create Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, then I say forget Microsoft Office, and go with AppleWorks 5. It is great for word processing and spreadsheets, and also has nifty drawing and painting tools. Finally, AppleWorks has built in database functions that are easy to use.

Most importantly, AppleWorks runs really really fast compared to Microsoft Office, and also takes up way less hard drive space and RAM.

AppleWorks 5.0.3 is a free update to users of ClarisWorks 5. It is essentially a name change, but there are also some bug fixes.
